H.264 is the latest video compression standard, which achives greater compression than others like MPEG-2/4. H.263 and so. So fat I didn't hear there is other one better than H.264.
As for image compression, the most popular codec is JPEG200, which uses wavelet transform. I think usually an image compression book will introduce a lot of methods used.
