I want an alarm if I have a water leak. I have seen water flow meters but they are expensive. There seems to be two types, ultrasonic and direct flow (connect in series). Does anyone know of a DIY project for this or a cheaper device?
You need a server to control the network and manage the clients. So your choice is Windows (SBS server 2008/11 for up to 75 clients) or separate components of a server system. Linux may be an option but that requires some experience. Presumably your project needs some hardware? There's enough...

I store things under a wooden floor which has a concrete subbase. There are water pipes under so flooding is a risk. I need to detect when a flood occurs so need to put a probe pair say 1mm from the concrete surface. The warning unit could be underfloor but temp. may be close to zero as it is...
