I want to simulate a VCO using CMOS, and I'm trying to simulate a 5 stage ring oscillator in HSPICE first.
I'm not getting any oscillations even though I've specified an initial condition, and the output voltage appears to settle somewhere between VDD and 0 after some initial spikes.

I was trying to visualise the triggering operation considering the behaviour of the three junctions, but I think I'd better stick to the two transistor analogy :-)
Didn't get what you mean by receiver frequency. The receiver won't generate a signal on its own; it will just receive signals coming from the transmitter.
You can simply connect a signal generator to the transmitter if you don't have a microphone. Just be sure to check the frequency; usually...
What exactly does happen when an SCR is triggered? Books explain the process by saying that the reverse biased middle junction breaks down. What I don't understand is how the voltage across it decreases to zero when an avalanche breakdown has occurred.
You can connect a standard signal generator directly to the transmitter and observe the waveform on an oscilloscope connected to the receiver.
The transmitter-receiver pair will probably be tuned to a particular frequency though, which should be given in the datasheets.

Yes I wanted to make a variable supply with a minimum voltage of 5 V and had no shortage of 7805s :-D
I guess i'd be better off using a 317. (A 7812 won't be able to give a voltage below 12 V, right?).
