there is another free soft from microsoft called virtual pc (vpc) that you can
download from their official site, i am using it with a version of ubuntu for a while

i think the book "Thinking in c++" from Bruce Eckel is the most reliable for
beginners you can get it freely from his site :www.BruceEckel.com
it is well documented with plenty of exemples and source code

there are even a "c" language and assembler with compilers and editor running under wince called Lcc107 and aplenty of exemples
There are in "pc bible" some explanations related to this topic which describe
cd-rom that communicates as an serial device instead of IDE bus which use a
parallel protocol
