U can use Pyroelectric Infrared sensors or PIR Motion Detection Sensor Module (RKI-1370)
Interface this with 8051 micrcontroller.

Usage of shift registers to add additonal I/Os on board requires more processing time,
You can reduce the processing time by using 8-bit Octal transperent latch (ex. 74ls373) for output port, use 74LS244 for input port, with a decoder (2x4).

I used FBUS communication with old NOKIA phones 3310, & 5110 5 years back. I remember the Mobile supports TTL voltage level RS232 signals. FT232 gives output +12V & -12V. Mobile requires 3.3V/5.0V. You can try this using RS232 to TTL level converter.
