Hello,
I had a similar strange problem installing Linux in a laptop and I fixed it disabling in the BIOS some hardware not suported in the startup CD. After that, when the installation has finished, I enabled the features in the Bios and they were detected automaticaly during the startup.

Red Hat is the reference for most of the Linux software vendors. The 7.3 release is very stable, so you could use this for working without any problem.

The Knoppix Linux is a good distribution for all the people that want to test and learn about this OS. But if you want to get into the system deeply I recomend to install an standard distribution on the hard disk (Debian, RH...)
