all u need to do in MCP2515 is to write configuration of a node first (once) and then to write transmt buffers(any time u need). now to go ON-BUS, u still need tranceiver(MCP2550 with CAN controller) on CAN Bus side.

Now i m in a better position to understand ur point.
MCP2515 has an SPI interface with host MCU (node controller. thats what u need to master derive can node). as far as ur application is concerned, in my point of view, u need a controller alongwith a CAN chip...

i can't understand what do u mean by 8 channels? r u talking about on bus channels. if so this IC is single channel.

is there any one using this protocol for serial communication.
i have a problem in transmitting extended can frames in MCP2515 development kit. but standard frames are transmitted successfully.
should i make some configuration changes?

i have used WinCC 5.0 by siemens with s7-314IFM CPU.
it is very powerful one b/c it is also from siemens. by the way, with what plc do u plan to use ur HMI?

i had been working on both microcontroller and SIEMENS plcs.
ur question is generalized but the choice among the controller and plc is application specific.
Use PLC when u have 2 things.
1-reporogrammability in runtime (or easy reprog.)
2-mixed signal handling...

i am facing problem in changing operational mode of MCP2515 CAN controller in run time using SPI interface command of "write".
