I played around with a DBMAXLED CPLD board from Altera (5x5 RGB LED matrix). Altough i canned the project I was able to send a 5x5 pixel block from a bitmap on my PC to the CPLD LED matrix. It worked quite well; you load any bmp into the app and then just drag the mouse...
