I don't know about AD part but looks good. Consider also the MAX1452 - is very good conditioner, PGA, filter, etc for strain gauge. Is missing ADC, but choose a good micro that has ADC on-board and you have complete system. Maxim has evaluation board with PC interface, very easy to...
On some MSP models the RST pin sources relatively large current if it is not driven hard low or high, other than that the pins are standard I/O with sub-uA currents at room temp.
I think LED triangulation has bad resolution over a *2 inch* range with standard PSD. I think standard PSD spatial linearity not that good, maybe 1% FS.
Rainbow Wizard, I never see interferometer with LED source. Any refs, it looks interesting.
Motor/leadscrew with encoder feedback maybe...
I like one analog and one digital, they both have advantages. For analog I buy a used Tek, like 4-channel 2246. Better value than most new ones. You get them on Ebay really cheap if lurking awhile. Usually can get 10 day return. I buy lots of Ebay equipment and only get one problem which...
Problem with 2N3055 may be 60V m@x and low dc hfe (beta). I don't understand what your supply voltage is. Might want to use MOSFET instead. The 555 should be fine with small gate resistor and duty cycle variation as described. Make sure MOSFET has sufficient Vds, Id and low Rds, and gate drive...
Laser interferometer would be overkill but extremely precise. Ultrasonic, Hall effect, TDR techniques probably too crude. LVDT sensors good. Also try Mitutoyo Digimatic dial indicators (https://www.mitutoyo.com). Model 543-462B has 50mm range, 0.0001mm resolution, but expensive.
For DIY, I drill panel myself then ink-jet print on full-page label adhesive sheets from Avery. Then I press on clear adhesive laminating sheet and cut the whole thing with a razor knive. Looks very professional and is long lasting. Also not too hard for 1 or 2 pcs. Also check out...
