Please dont take offence, but using an I2C is quite basic, and I think if you cant master that then you may be in trouble with the other parts of your project, I can supply some code for read/write to I2C if you like but they are in assembly and written for 16F series.

An excellent site is http://www.winpicprog.co.uk/pic_tutorial.htm has a series of small circuit boards to make for his tutorials, starts very basic - i.e. turning LED on and off, then advances a little, covers switches, 7 seg LED, LCD, RS232 etc.

the 9 pin connector is a serial connector, not parallel, do now understand your problem, but unfortunately cant answer it, I cant wee whi womeone would design a circuit for use in an lpt port and then use a db9, maybe i'm missing something but theres not a lot of info on their site...

started with 16F628 due to there being so many tutorial/info on the net about is (it is an almost direct replacement for the 84). didnt have enough i/o ports so moved onto the 877.

I have some generic I2C routines and will post them if you like, I'm using 16F877A with assembly right now on a project but using a PCF 8583, the code should work just fine.

The RTC chip you are using seems a bit OTT for your use. But basically, once you power on the RTC, it should start counting, and often RTC chips will pulse on one of their ppins every second...
