normal patch antenna is a standwave antenna.traveling wave antenna have matching load.
you can find the details in the book "handbook of microstrip antenna"
i have disigned a loaded microstrip antenna using IE3D9.3.i find impedance matching is easy to achieve,but the GAIN is very low!
and it is not like what some papers said.
who can help me?
is there any other EDA software can simulate the loaded microstrip antenna?

the old method is the smith chart.now you can find some small tools such as APPCAD3.0.smith chart design guide in ADS2003 is very excellent.but the release isn't come yet.
