If you are a newbie I think that your best choice is the CCS compiler, is simple to use and all the pheripheral drivers are included, you don't need to study very deeply all the device manual and your application cab build in shortest time.

If you need to port Linux on microcontrollers you have two choices:
- For micro with memory management unit you can use the standard Linux but the footprint of memory requirements can be high.
For micro without memory management unit probably the best distribution is uCLinux.

Orc@d versions 10.x with $pecctra included seems a very good product, I haved done a layout with fine pitch bga packages and the result was very good. The price of this product probably is high.

You can check also the Xlink Microblaze, the advantage are that for this device you can find a lot of example on the web, included the uClinux porting, for the NIOS the most applications are available only from business companies.

I have a good feel with Motorola Family of microcontrollers, the tools are good and the debug can be done by a very low cost BDM tool.
