What type of battery - (Sealed) Lead Acid, NiMH, NiCd, Li-Ion ?
Charging of series connected NiMH or NiCd cells is usual practice.
LA batery is infact series connected 3 (6V) or 6 (12V) cells.
Li-Ion battery is too sensitive for charging to be connected in series with another cell.

I'm using Tait programmer (74LS07, pnp transistors) and Winpic.
I have also a serial programmer, but it is useless for PIC12F629/675 in _MCLRE_OFF & _INTRC_OSC_NOCLKOUT mode.
The paralel programmer was tested with PIC12F675, PIC16F627 and PIC16F871.

Re: problem with PIC
Check the message once again.
Probably the message is: "Pic is not blank", i.e. not empty.
Whitout pic in the programmer's socket, programmer's software reads 1's, that is usual situation with blank chip.
I'm using ICprog and Winpic on WinXP without any additional drivers.
