Equinox has hubs and pci cards that allow you to control serial ports remotely trough a lan. May be they could help you. Have a look at www.equinox.com :o
Try to do this:
-take off your laptop´s memory and clean it,s contacts with a rubber, yes a rubber.
-test your power supply (you shoul do this first)
-take off al pcmcia cards, may be that one produces the failure
-dissarm it and test if the cpu cooling fan works propertly
-If it doesn´t work...
