the components which gives linear response like for increse in input; output will be more such components are linear ex-resistror, capacitor etc..and exactly reverse in case of non linear components

Can anybody answer why these diodes are connected in rev bias? here is the link to my question.
(those are to regulate the voltage but how come a simple diode works in reverse bias?)...
