to find eadges using soble filter you can use "edge" in matlab and using its parameters u can use sobbel ang gosian filter
fingerprint enhancement matlab
according to my experiances, i find curveletes more and more effective than gabor filters
if your image content is curves such as fingerprints you can enhance is very effective with curvelets
it's only an experiance i don after reading your msg: decomposition your audio sigal by a mother wavelete and then compose a signal by another mother wavelets, it may be intersting ;)

You can approximate you filter Impulse responce by dividing H(jw) = output(jw)/input(jw) , but it may be not correct of all frequencies if you input does not contain some frequencies.

when we want to use box-count theorem we have to limit box size to zero
but in practice we face with quantized signal(Images,...) and it is impossible(FD is going to zero) , do you know any practical algorithm to find the best aprozimation of Fractal Dimensions(FD).

If we have a "dot-product space" then two vector are ortogonal if and only if their dot-product(Inner product) is equal to zero ,you are familier with dot-product in kartizian...

for findin oriantation in fingerprint iimages have look at the Atmel Web page you can find a very hellpfull appliacation but it isn't open source and worst than it ,it is a third party app , but i belaive i it is a nice visit.

I'm realy belive that VC++ and other Normal Programming Languges(for me Delphi) are more powerfull than matlab and you can only with them find out the real performance of your algorithms.
