| I'm a LSI design engineer working in China. I think most foreign companies in china don't place emphasis on the R&D. They just provide some customer service and market service or research,or establish some factories. Actually most good engineers want to work in world-famous companies such as MS, IBM, Intel and so on. I'm working in Shanghai. Shanghai is an attractive city. Lenovo has just bought the PC sales from IBM  ,
last year they merged mobile phone developpement with ALCATEL, 
which western companie will be the next one...

IDT China works well, its previous name is newaves, so IDT bought it. And recently more and more famous companies in the world startup their R&D center in China, since they are not sure about the design capability in China, so just simple tasks were assigned to China R&D center.
With the engineers' design capability increasing, more tasks will be assigned to China for its cheap resource. In fact, the ability to run a company is more important.

| could anyone in china explain why product make in china are low end? is it the quality of engineering there or they want to sell it cheap so the quality control not so strict?

| now, in china, there are 450 IC design houses/companies. but few of them make money. many of them just have 5~20 persons. i think 3 years or 5 years later. most of them will disappear.

I think in Shanghai Spreadtrium Corporation is a good example which is developed by Chinese men with USA Ph.Ds, and the company does good at baseband and RF IC of 3G mobile phone.

I think the ic company can get good profit in beijing and shanghai .because there are many famouse univerities and have a favourable environment for these company.

In Shanghai,
Every year some companys disappear, but more companys are founded.
In IC area, because many foundries are founded, the design house will have a bright future .
And it is very close to the consumer market.
