Originally this was a method of oversampling an analog signal and representing the values of the samples by pulses of areas (for fixed height this would be width) proportional to the sampled value. The amplification would be caused by making the pulses of high amplitude using digital logic techniques. These techniques would be nearly 100% efficient. The output would be low pass filtered to recover the analog signal at a higher power level. This recovery is flawed because the PWM produces harmonics with large number of sidebands which extend to baseband. These amplifiers are only used in low quality audio systems.

Since then with so many academics and magazine article writers being ignorant of the history of their technology area making new definitions, there are many more types of systems called class D.
