Hi,

I think both.

Reason is that they have slightly different markets.

For versatility MPEG4 has a much wider range. With 3D, Meshes, FBA and such features.

h.264, on the other hand, is a very good rectangular frame compressor that beats MPEG4 in compression/quality. I have heard that h.264 has been approved for HDTV (like MPEG2 was chosen for DVDs and DVB).

You should check out the excellent introductory book "H.264 and MPEG-4 Video Compression" that is available on this board for an excellent overview.

Judging from your previous posts, I can guess that you have studied the MPEG2 specs as well. This book will also answer your "what's the difference between MPEG2 and MPEG4 compression" question.

MPEG4 and H.264,especially in STB and handheld
device.

????
To my understanding H.264 is the same than MPEG4-AVC, an improved version of "classic" MPEG4 (ASP) with new technical resources but not a competitor with pros and cons beyond increased complexity. Am I wrong?

Completely agree with yousuf. MPEG-4 and H.264 really complement each other very well.
@turttle:
H.264 is another name for MPEG-4 AVC / Part 10. H.264 supports many new features as opposed to MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile too. Main features like multiple reference frames motion estimation, highly robust error resilience tools, variable block sizes, and so on. So definitely, H.264 surpasses the expectations provided by MPEG-4. As yousuf said, MPEG-4 will be more appropriate for synthetic coding, meshes, 3D, facial and the likes along with regular compression. But if H.,264 beats the compression efficiency of H.264 with rectangular frame support, then H.264 is on the go. And MPEG-4 for arbitrary shaped objects.

H.264 and MPEG-4 together.
