This greatly depends on your needs (Code size, number of ports, speed).
For example a 89C51RD2 is about 2 times as expensive as a PIC16F877 which again is as least two times a PIC 16F628 ...
As said does vary with your needs so it is best to select the CPU you are really needing and then check the prices.
best regards

It is nor important to think about the cost of microcontroller. You must chose the microcontroller that is suitable and convenience for you to design system.

| yes, you may make a choice between cheap MCU+large PCB+additional hardware and larger MCU+almost nothing in certain case

i will suggest motorola..
for large production it will be cheap..
and if u upgrade to new mcontroller then there will be no difference on footprint ..u can use old pcb layout..
n even u will get lots of code from comapny..
if u need s/w for mc then i guess all major company supports motorola chips..
best of luck..

| In my Uni the most popular is the AT89C52, quite cheap and does most of the things we want. It all depends on what you need.

Hi All,
I would suggest PIC which comes in many different perperials configurations which in turn give you a lower cost in design. Also if you upgrade your PIC to higher memory, you need not change your hardware pin out.
However I would take manufacturer's lead time for their MCUs as one of the considerations. I heard lead time for Philips and Motorola is very long, so I would not suggest them if you are going to full production your products.
Regards

I have heard many say Holtek is the cheapest 8 bit MCU.
But it all depends on your needs for size, speed, flash, pheripheals etc.
Please be more specific about your needs and how many MCUs you need.

Shouldn't you guys give some numbers .??
Otherwise it is just buzz!
I know for a fact that Ti 430c1101 goes for $0.50 but in 100K pieces .
well at least this is a 16 cpu ..
Otherwise .. the prices are always negoatiable and depend on wheather the product is bein introduced etc.
I had a design 3 years ago .The c5051F303 was being introduced the price for 100 pieces was $7 .But we talked to cygnal and for 100k they were willing to go for $1.99 .

Hi,
Checkout Holtek and ELAN microcontrollers, They are the cheapest . Infact ELAN is a lil similar to PIC. But tech support is the worst .

Hi All,
ELAN is very low cost but only in mask or otp. I have faced problem with clone PIC, not an option for me. Microchip 18 pins can go below a US$1 depending what perperials and memory size you getting. 8051 from Philips is also going at very low price almost like PIC. ST MCU also very low cost. All these MCU are flash type.

price is dependent on several aspects.... among these very complicated dependencies is the dealer/source where you would purchase the device, another is the manner of purchasing, another is the brand, etc....
in my case i choose a microcontroller depending primarily on the need. practically its useless to use a cheap uC if its not enough for the application (ie the perpherals, clock, memory, etc)

I am a mcu engineer from china mainland. In china, Taiwanese brand like Elan,Holtek,Winbond are cheaper than European&US&Japanese brand like ST,PIC,RENESAS,NEC. but performance is not as good as the latter. PIC occupies
a great part in china market, especially in industrial area and car electronics.

and only cheap, go for AT89S52-24

| thats right blueroom. Useless to discuss about this unless we know full requirements & then conclude for cheapest one. I said AT89c2051 but it would be useless if ADCs are required.

Senthilkumarr posted this in 2004. Now I thing he will prefer better controller rather than cheaper.
