I want to learn a float points dsp. although tms320vc33 series are cheap and MIPS is fast enough, i think they are somewhat out of date because:

in TI's web ( or other TI's advertisements), we can find c6000, c5000 and c2000 are the mainsteam. Unluckily, c33 series are belong to "other TMS320 DSPs" and the datasheets or user's guide have not been updated since several years ago.(maybe never been) .

8031 mcus have lived for at least twenty years and will live for another twenty years although they are slow and not so advanced. why c33 can not be that?

why the mainsteam dsps must be fast and expensive, not slow and cheap?

finally, please recommend me a float points dsp which is popular, cheap. thanks.

Hi
To clarify .. you can't compare the life time of a microntroller with a DSP
In particular comparing the 51 is a bad idea .. The 51 (old 31 ) was the first microcontroller and it was licenced to the 4 corners of the world .. Intel designed a lot of micros that are now DEAD .. the 8096 , the 8048
the 8088 , 80286 ,, the i9060KA .So not a good idea .Others motorolas
HITACHIS ROCKWELLS are very much DEAD ...
In the case of the DSP the comparaison doesn't make sense ..Why keep
producing an old product NOT BEING SOLD ??.,. who will want to buy a FLOATING POINT CPU that is slow by today's STANDARDS ??.. is not a MATTER OF JUST updating the cpu to a faster SPEED .. this already requires to migrate to a new silicon process ..and a new FACTORY ..
But you also want more INSTRUCTIONS per cycle .. So a new design makes sense .. a DSP is not a watt resistor .. Custumers want more processing power + better memories and less power consumption
A NEW DESIGN altogether!

Hi,eltonjohn
Thanks for your help. Please recommend me a cheap float points dsp. Although C6000 are powerful, they are too expensive for me and i do not need so fast speed.

HI friend

Well it depends of your target price, the quantity and how fast they need to be..and also very important how needs the DATA RESORVOIR to be?
big SDRAM , medium SRAM .. etc
I appears that you dont't need to respond in real time .
If that is the case ..you could use a powerful and cheap 51 ..like the ones from cygnal ($6).. you can do soft floating point .using libraries .. there is even an app note on this ..
otherwise if you want a real DSP .. and $20 is a good price .. there are several solutions there is the ADSP -21065LKS .from analog devices ..
it runs at 60 mhz and is capable of 198 MFLOPS ! it has a SDRAM interface and on board 544 Kbit dual port mem multiproessor interface ,DMA and a lot MORE!

so probably for less than $20 a great choice!
