Post21 Apr 2004 8:12   Chinese language

Hi all,

Everyone is keen to open business in China, however, as far I know in China most of them do not speak English. So are you going to learn chinese?

Any comment, info, link, book for learning chinese are all welcome here.

regards,

I think it is better to go for a mandarin class retaher than just learning by dictionary! We need to know the 'slang' and how to say some words in chinese!

I've plan to take mandarin class next month, wanna join me? Wink

Hi guamak_menanak,

I'm actually a chinese, so i can speak, read, write in chinese.

IMO, The most effective way to learn chinese can be these few ways:

1. Mix arround with Chinese. Try to understand what they say or talk with them in chinese.

2. attend chinese classes.

3. listen to chinese songs Rolling Eyes

4. most importantly, your determination to learn (it's for everything) and how much the interest you have.

the links provided above by Al Farouk are actually quite good. maybe u can start from there.

If someone really wanna learn chinese/mandarin, my advice is : try to master in the "Pin Yin", make sure u are able to capture the pronounce or slang. Different pronounce will come out with other word/meaning, so be careful. Razz

My suggestion is:
find a chinese friend, try to talk with him/her by chinese, it is the best /quickest method to learn chinese. the dictionaries are useless.

tom_hanks,
India has 15 official languages and about 800 unofficial languages/dialects. English is the lingua franca in India and definately so in the tech-India. I think more people speak English than any one language in India! (India is a former British colony and is a member of the Commonwealth) . So I think if your needs are business, English is all you need in India .

Learning hindi is definately easier than learning Chinese or Japanese, which derives many of its 'Kanjis' from Chinese language. Pronounciations in hindi require a lot of practice for non Indians, there are 16 vowels in Indian languages. This may be the reason why there is booming call-center business in India. AFAIK Indians can easily speak American, British or Austrailan accents Wink.

Hi all,

Most of my friends and colleagues from INDIA can speak very fluent English. However most of my school-mate from CHINA could not speak English. So, I (personally) think that with English, it should be enough for you to open a business in INDIA. However it might not be the same case in CHINA. So you should at least learn Chinese or other option :
hire a Chinese <-> English translator.

P/S: Do not forget, Taiwan is also occupied by Chinese.

Quote:

this is written in traditional chinese and goes right only for Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao. also I think that they speeks Cantonese ( seems that it also used in America's Chinese community ). For the Mainland China you need to write in simplified chinese and speak Mandarin.

To learn how to speak Mandarin use these:
Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone and Transparent Language softwares. Also search for a Chinese friend.

this is the simplified version:
我们都是一家人
Wo3men dou1 shi4 yi2jia1ren2

where 一yi1 becomes yi2 because after it there is another character with a first tone

orikfa,

you are right. In chinese, the same word comes with different pronounce sometimes, especially when it joins with another word(s). I believe apart from Taiwanese, most of the chinese now use/learn simplified version.

Post27 Apr 2004 14:29   Re: Chinese language

Arabic is a character based language similar to english. it consist of 28 characters from them you can build all the words you need. it is not difficult for writing or speaking as you need effort to know 28 symbles only that represents the character and speak them.
some arabic learner see that the grammer of it is difficult, but that is one source of it is powerful as you decide from the speaking who do the action, whose is done with, the gender of the speaker, etc .....

for example
1- in chinese
ta1 = 他 她 you know the gender from speaking, only when writing you can know the geneder, in arabic it is clear from speaking as you say
هو = male= he= 他, هى = Femal= shi = 她

2- in pin yin (as a methode you can speak chinese using latin characters)
ha3 = 好 = خـاو
you need to know that H does not spoken as in english, but the beside arabic word is typical as chinese say.

3- In english
(a)when saying
you: you can not distinguish single, group, male, femal who are spoken.
in arabic you say أنت = single , أنتم = group gender is also defined.

there are a lot that I can not explain in this shor note

you can get a look at
