icprog usb to parallel

hi there,
please help me with this.
i got this kit from silicon chip dse -sep2003.
i built this pic programmer - jdm programmer which it should be.
the pic programmer should be functionable because it met up with the several specified testpoints, so i supposed that it is working.

the problem should lies with the io driver installed in my laptop.
i had a usb to serial port convertor.
i installed the port io driver and the ic-prog as advised.
the problem is that i can use the hardware check to test the programmer (using the mclr and the data out met with in the data in ticks.)
BUT i cant do the above using the mentioned hardware check using io direct mode.
although, it is allowable, the ic-prog progesses as per normal to write / erase e.g. BUT it does behave as it should.

please help asap.
thanks.

jdm programmer kit

The jdm type of programmers are often tricky to get working, especially on anything other than a completely standard RS232 port.

Sometimes, the voltage swing on the port is not high enough, or not enough current is available from it. Remember that the port was not intended to supply power.

Try the programmer on a desktop PC with a normal RS232 port - if it works there then you know the problem lies in the laptop's port or driver and you can start to check voltages etc.

Look here:

Cheers,
FoxyRick.

pic jdm programmer silicon chip

Hi there,
I tried your recommendation of using a desktop and it works.
but i wonder if you can advise me on how to resolve this problem so that i can use my laptop instead of asking my friend.

my laptop does not have a com port. it goes thru a usb to serial convertor.
please advise.

thanks.

jdm 13 volt

Hi Mike,

I'm glad you got it working. The problem is, the JDM is designed *entirely* around using the voltage levels on a (standard) serial port - I don't know a way to make it work that is simple and reliable. That's why I've never used one.

Maybe someone else here knows where you could modify the circuit to add external power?

Really, the answer is to build a different programmer that is more reliable. Do you have a parallel port or USB to parallel convertor? If so, I would highly recommend a propic 2 design. That's what I made.

It can program almost any PIC (I have done 18F452, 16C765, 16F877A, 16F84 and a few others) using icprog software.

I built one from the original schematics and PCB design (from http://www.propic2.com ) but there are other (some simpler single sided) designs around. The good thing is that it does not need a programmed PIC to make it, just a few standard logic chips and other usual parts.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
FoxyRick.

jdm icprog test

when i look to icprog i found that it need the 12 volt to apply on mclr for pic microcontroller and every pin need only 5 v so i built simple circuit with opamp tl084 as compartor with +13 and -13 volt supply
