Does anyone have any experience building an OBD II scanner for reading diagnostics from auto computers? I would like to build one instead of buying one.
TIA

I have tons of experience, but I can tell you right now, don't get involved. To begin with, there are 4 different hardware/software protocols, 2 of which require their own proprietary chip. These chips are not available without the approval of the car manufacturers (ie Ford and GM). The other two are fairly easy to implement in hardware, but require much more complicated software, but none of it is easy (why do think the scan tools are so expensive?). If you just want to read the blink codes, get the $39.95 version at Pep Boys, but to get the real DTC's, you're better off spending the bucks for a Vetronix scan tool (don't even bother with a Snap-On).

Hello,
I'm making my own scanner for VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda. Up to now, everything is okey. I could get the DTCs from my ECU with a preliminar code, now I have to make a good scanner.

I build my own version of ELEKTOR projects and it's working more than ok. Go to this link and read little bit:
http://www.elmelectronics.com/index.html
http://www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM320DS.pdf
http://www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM322DS.pdf
http://www.elmelectronics.com/DSheets/ELM323DS.pdf
These ICs are OBD to RS232 interpreter for PWM,VPW and ISO standard. This covers almost every car I know.

Hi,
There is a site on OBD II that provides information for DIY OBD II users. Here is its URL:
http://www.obdii.com
I really liked the site. I don't know how helpful it is in implementing a reader or so, but it sure is informative.
Irfan.

Hello Guys!!!
Nice Forum!!
I've made my own Tester vor VAG Cars. I have most info about VAG Protocol, and over 4000 codes database! I collect information over 4 years!
I know how to change mileage and code for keys in VDO odometers.
I need to know how to read/write EEPROM, PROM.... via diagnostic socket.
I'll be very thankfull if any can help me!
Bye!

Very funy!!!
hahaha
It cost me over 4 years to find this info! That is not a gift!
Because of this I prefer to communicate via e-mail.

For ISO 9141 you can start from this documentations.
For J 1850 VPW you can use Motorola's uP with Byte Data Link Controller.
Very cheap is the OBD-RS232 converter at http://obddiagnostics.com realized with a PIC16F84 (see scheme in attachment).
Bye.

Unfortunately that's true. I contacted the guy who "distributes" the PIC and he told me that he wants to see $40 for the kit (including shipping costs).
Does somebody know more about how VPW has to be implemented?? Maddin

I am using the BR-3 interface to a notebook computer. I found it on the obddiagnostics website. I am working on a 1999 ford escort 2.0l with split injection. I am looking for anyone else testing a ford escort with a similar interface. I have questions about readings off of the TPS. My idle seems to drop slowly after stopping. The idle is high at 1050 rpm. My throttle position shows 20% or higher. If I remove the TPS from the intake, it drops to 11% but rpms stay at about 1050.
If you've had similar luck on a small ford or mazda, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
TIA, Dave
