The problem with this is the firmware in the usb interface. So I bought one for £144 from farnell. It is nice, but it also has a RS232 interface.
So, maybe we can reverse engineer this, forget the usb, and just go with the rs232. I think it is very much like the icd1. Will get back to you!

Hi,
i could probably help you with the firmware....
some time ago I got an ICD2 firmware (for 18f452) but could not verify if its not a fake, because I do not have the schematic I would need.

Hello,

I think it is easier to use the old ICD1 hardware with the free firmware from CCS (http://www.ccsinfo.com/download.shtml). With the firmware from CCS you can program all available PIC devices. And with the CCS C Compiler ist is also possible to debug.

Hello juan_manuell,

as far as I know you can program and debug all available PIC devices with the firmware (ICD-S) from CCS (http://www.ccsinfo.com/devices.shtml). The firmware (you have to program the PIC of your ICD1 with this) from CCS is not compatible with MPLAB! For debugging with the CCS firmware you will need the software tools from CCS. You can get a free programming tool (ICD-S, http://www.ccsinfo.com/download.shtml ) but not a free debugging tool from CCS.
BTW there are two ICD-S firmwares from CCS. One for 4 MHz and one for 20 MHz. The 20 MHz version is much faster!

Not solution for me because i have just hitech tools and mplab 6.30
what can i do? Invest in CCS?

I have new idea, i am looking for make icd1 compatible with mplab6.3.
If it's possible, i resovle half of my problem.

Am I getting the right end of the stick here, is it possible to upgrade a microchip icd1 to icd2 capabilities, i.e. debugs 18f and 12f etc. with a firmware upgrade? If it is right, is salamanders hex code what I need? Sorry for all the questions.

Hello,

1) You can use the original ICD-1 Hardware with CCS Firmware (ICD-s).

2) Free available Software from CCS for Programming PIC16 and PIC18

3) Debugging only with CCS PCW Software (not testet by me)

3) The newer versions also allow Firmwarechanging.
This means changing between Microchip ICD-1
Firmware and CCs ICD-S Firmware without removing
the Programmer PIC

Steps:

- Downlod ICD-S Software from CCs Homepage
****://***.ccsinfo.com/icds.exe
- install it
-programm an empty 16F876 with bootload.hex
-change PIC on the ICD Hardware
-start icd.exe
-update Firmware to ICD-s Version ...

Now you can Program PIC16 and PIC18 with an old ICD-1

Cheers mate. I'be tried it and it works well, can I program a PIC12F with it, and if so do I need pic16 or pic18 firmware. I know the obvious answer is no, but I'm sure I've seen it mentioned on their site.

We want make a clone of icd2 or make icd1 option in mplab 6.30.
Mplab is good solution for developping howere the icd tool is good debugger for pic solution.

I've tried to use the CCS firmware in the ICD1, but I the get so many serial communications errors that I needed to reprogram the ICD pic with the original Microchip firmware (with a standalone programmer...). Am I unlucky or this happened to others? Sad

I'm using a ICD1 hardware with the firmware (ICD-S, 20MHz, 2003-09-17) from CCS for programming a PIC16F676. Versions before 2003-09-17 had problems to program a 676. CCS fixed it after sending an email to them - so if you have problems with 16F877A or 18F242 they may help you, but not within 24h Sad

Do you have a copy of the firmware that they sent you, could you pm me it.

Does anyone know if I can burn the s40 firmware and change to a 10Mhz chip, and if so does this mean I wouldn't have to keep updating the firmware when I change between 16f and 18f.
I burnt the 20Mhz firmware and got it running, but I'm having trouble getting it to update firmware, although I think that this might be to do with my PIC, anyone got any ideas.

My test was done after downloading ICD-S from that link, and with that update date.

I've an ICD1 with 16LF876 running at 3.68MHz... which firmware can I use? I think the ccsicd.hex and not the ccsicd20.hex, right? Can I change the crystal and mount a 20MHz one, and use the '20' file for programming the ICD micro? Question

Sometimes I had problems to update the firmware correctly. So I took the hex code out of the file "icdfirmware-01-14.fw" and saved it into an extra hex.file for programming the firmware with an extra programmer.

The "icdfirmware-01-14.fw" contains different firmware versions for diffrent usage:

ccsicd-pic16.hex @ 3,6864 MHz (firmware device: 16F876, hardware: ICD-S, target device: PIC16)
ccsicd-pic18.hex @ 3,6864 MHz (firmware device: 16F876, hardware: ICD-S, target device: PIC18)
