I'm redesigning PCB for ProPic 2 gold (once done I'll post it here, Eagle file) and I have few questions. Original schematic is using DB9 on PCB, and DB9-DB25 cable. I want to use DB25male connector instead, so I just want to make sure I have it right.
I got all pins except the one from 12c505 (pin # 5, marked as CLK VDD 8- it's connected to DB9 pin8, but what is it used for?
Is it connected to any pin in DB25?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
Zibby.

pin8 is a handshake pin
and usualy is used to talk to the software or the port

Look at h***://***.geocities.com/mpu51
you will find propic2 there. but little changed. infact they are same(propic2 std). And also single side pcb.
it has db25 connector on pcb .
i learn how to connect propic2 db9 to computers db25 port.

Ok, let me rephrase my question. Original ProPic2 (and all mods) are connected to parallel port (printer port, LTPx), not serial port (COMx). Original schematic is using DB9 connector, with cable DB9 to DB25.
Original schematic has labels for DB9 and also parallel port DB25.
E.g. D4-5-4 where:
D4 is parallel port pin description
5 is DB25 pin
4 is DB9 pin
So I have question about pin9 (DB9) labeled CLK VDD8-8 connected to
PIC12C508 pin5. What is it used for, and what pin (DB25) is it connected to.
http://www.propic2.com/files/schema.pdf
BTW, I did check out other schematics (read mods), but none of them are using 12C508.
Thanks.

As far as I can tell CLK VDD8-8 is used to control VCC_VAR voltage.
This feature is only on ProPic Gold.
VCC_VAR is connected to VDD thru a tansistor switch in Gold version. In standard version VDD is just connected to 5V.
The variable voltage VCC_VAR is used to test the PIC at different voltagetes instead of only the standard 5V.
This is mostly intended for professional use, to verify that the PIC works at different operation voltages, for example 3.3V.
If you don't want this feature just connect emitter of T5 to 5V isntead of VVC_VAR and then you don't need the circut inside the dotted lines with PIC12C508 and LM358.

I have hex for 12c508 and want to use it with this programmer.
So because of that I want to make sure pin8 (db9) is connected to pin8 (db25)
Thanks.

IT DOES !!!!!
ok..... i have built and used it
and originaly posted ppg2 in 1999 here
followed by the production grade programmer firmware for the 12c508a
rather that the orignal ppg2 this must be flashed to a pic508
it comes back to mind
the software for the propic pre xp is the only one that works
look here for alternatives
propic clone
http://www.enetsystems.com/~lorenzo/propic2/
here is a second clone uses some cmos to do the job of the pic
and a charge pump to do the psu arrangements
http://www.geocities.com/mpu51/propic/propic2.htm
maybe adding his additions to the epropic2 will be better
any views???
the software is all that matters to this design
use your hex the v2.9bla version of the software win 98 or me
fake licence {tip is copy the new ini fie back it contains the newer chips but you can buy it cheep 20 euros is only the price of a few meals.... and meals make projects but if you can find a way around the 100 byt limit cool///
and this design i put together then covers all chips and some avr and all senix via icprog
you can double varify looking at this guys pcb etc
if still not convinced
it is normal to connect an i/o to a lpt port direct so dont worry inside the lpt port controller is resistors to limit any current

you re right. db9->pin8 connected to db25->pin8
db25 pins 2 3 4 5 6 7 10 have connections.
dont forget. before you insert a pic (target and 508) to programmer test it using propic2 XP software. watch leds and check voltages.
if there is a error you can see easily. then replace 508.

ill think of something
SEEMS THE XP AND PROPIC2 PROBLEM IS SOLVED
so this project will make a nice addition for basic langauges and also allow for lv flash etc etc.....

pcbs added to epropic2
ill put it back tomorrow
with corrected pcb layouts
design in brains topic above
The epropic can program any ic that picbasic supports
and some it dosnt
it can happily be used as an icp icd and isp as the propic also can be brocken out for this type of programming
by removing the board
for some strange chips {fpga plcc etc}
this requires making other sockets
i dont have the full layouts for
so we need a kind member to show us some adapters
so far i found a 40pin and 18 pin {inc eeprom and 24c serial stuff}
so pretty much covers a few
we need pic16ctype {long skinny 24pin } although if you look on there site
you get more of an idea but parts missing to make it dificult to ident the connections
help!!! hehe

Have constructed ProPic 2 on a redesinged PCB , Running the latest software (Unregistered) on the ProPic 2 Webpage on OS....XP and 2000.
When burning 16F84 all OK, but when READ Back the buffer displays all 0's. When the 16F84 is programed with ProPic 1 and readback on ProPic 2 all seems fine.
The problem seems to be with the burning action. Have verified PCB , Cables and setup, also the voltage test on the Software all test OK.
I requested help from ProPic 2 WebPage, but the responce was that the Software needs to be registered. The ProPic 2 Webpage state that the the software will work in a demo mode. In this mode you can program up to address 0x100.....Can the problem be the software ?
Thank you

If you use PROPIC hardware, try using ICPROG as the software.
It works fine.

Lodie...
I have had exactly the same problem whith my original hardware propic 2. PropicXP can read PIC's OK, but does not want to program them at all. I tried icprog and it worked.
Be aware that icprog 1.05C has a few problems with certain PIC's, including the 16F84. It *does* program them, but cannot read them back to verify! Use version 1.5 (no letter) if it supports your PIC, or use 1.05C to program and PropicXP to *verify* only if it is a problem PIC type.
Cheers,
FoxyRick.

One question on ProPic 2 and IC-Prog
does they support 16F627A/628A 'A' versions?
As far as I know, you need to pull PGM pin to GND (according to IC-Prog page), does ProPic 2 has that features?

I have read lots about the failure of PropicXP Gold. How it works with standard PCB (without 12C508) but with Gold software? Should I try the older Propic or try this new PropicXP... but I have to program 16F876A!!!
I have also read about the success of ICprog with Propic hardware... hows that?
Which version of ICprog should I download to program 16F876A?

I opened this Eagle Files and there is two missing connections, comparing the Eagle schematic with the original one:
1. Connection between Data signal and ZIF socket pin 15.
2. Connection between Clock signal and ZIF socket pin 16.
Why this version doesn't have those connections? Is it a mistake or is there some reason for that?

Hello All
Please I have a question regarding the potentiometer. It's written that it's adjusted for a 5volt output at the second opamp. Under what conditions should I adjust it?
i.e, when I just connect the power supply to the circuit or simulate programming (write a hex file to the parallel port without an MCU)?
Thanks in advance

this programmer is crap
drop kick your efforts
invest in a picall or a chinese top2006 usb or serial
the picall you can get for less than 150 euros
and the top for 70euros
the top covers 56000 devices
the picall a mear 700 or less
the propic a simple few
get a top and its sent direct for maybe some small tax also in your country
