not sure if wanted to implement yourself buy off the shelf, there are also hotlink devices from Cypress semi-conductors - which provide a lot of choice on the transmission medium and transmission lenghts.

What "high speed" you are referring to? Broadcom, Vitess, MindSpeed are all good supplier of SERDES up to 10 Gbps.
