If you configure a triac for 'always one' (gate connected to MT2 with resistor), and you have your load on MT1, driving an AC voltage through it does not turn on the traic IF the ground is connected to MT2. It'll work all day long if it's the MT1 side.
Is this a software error?

I guess, you have problems to measure the load voltage in your simulation setup. You may want to use a differential voltage
marker to visualize it. It's working as expected.
