Microchip doesn't recommend the PIC16F877 for new designs - it has been superceded by the PIC16F887.
For someone to provide a valid recommendation, you need to provide details on your project. Otherwise, we can't accurately gauge the memory, power and speed requirements necessary to meet your needs. There are thousands of processor to choose from.
Microchip has a great on-line tool that can aid you in selecting a controller - http://www.microchip.com/maps/microcontroller.aspx
