what does cross-reference database mean in Calibre verification environment?

After layout extraction there exist 2 different netlists, the schematic and the layout netlist. Both use different instance and net names. After a successful LVS run there will be a cross-reference database which links the layout to the schematic names. This database is necessary for the purpose of backannotation - and it helps a lot for searching for circuit errors.
In some cases (e.g. highly symmetric circuits) you can help the LVS to succeed, if you manually create cross-references for special instances or nets.
