signal integrity concept

Hi,

can someone help explain why the interconnect is modeled as transimission line when the interconnect is relatively long compared to the rising edge wave length? why the interconnect is modeled as lump capacitor when it is relatively short? i feel that most of the books skip this when introduce the SI concept. is there an intuitive or plain way to explain this? thanks.

best regards
gd

A transmission line model can't be wrong in both cases. The question is, if the predicted waveforms are still correct,
if you replace it by a much simpler lumped element model.

I hope, you can figure out, why the answer is different between both cases.

a basic question on the signal integrity concept

any trans line haas a model consists of capacitance, resistance and inductance for simplicity in analysis, the wave length, trans. line length, width and some other factors affect the transmission line model, so the effect of each element of the above appear in relative with each other, read CMOS RF circuits for thomas lee or behzad rasavi books you may find some topics in detials.
good luck
