why does the volmeter measure the rms value of voltage and not the peak or avg. value:?Confused?

because it is of more use than the peak, Most of the cases RMS valus is of use thatn the peak.

RMS is the effective voltage ...

u can calculate peak from RMS if u require taht .

voltmeter
Beside what BABESH mentioned
usually most of voltmeters use a rectifier circuit before measuring voltage, so AC is converted to DC, however there are some voltmeter read Vpp and rms.
