which is brighter 3mm led vs 5mm led

Hi everyone.

I have a question.
Given a limited board space, and a fix illumination target.
Which type of Lamp of LED would produces the brightest effect.

I am thinking the 3mm LED is smaller and can fit in more LED
within the same board space.
With more die on the PCB board, I guess the sum of light energy
would be greater then a 5mm LED.

The manufacturer advise on 5mm LED but I would like to
understand why is this so?

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Siong Boon

The brightest one will most probably the one with the highest current rating. If they are the same then go for the smaller one.

Cheap LEDs look bright because they have a focussed narrow viewing angle.

The size of the LED will not (majorly) affect the brightness of the LED. Look at the MCD rating of the LED on a datasheet, and compare the two to see which is the brighter. The size should not really be an issue
