Hi All:

Why flicker noise is so concern by the designer even though the main signal level is far far above the flicker noise or 1/f noise level?

What kind of circuit that is sensitive to the 1/f noise? Analog, digital, RF?

Please comment, thanks.

Hi waiheng318,

I think that each circuit that functionning in the low frequency is sensitive to the fliker noise such as the audio applications.

Flicker noise is a problem in circuits which need to process signals close to dc ( zero ) frequency.

It is also a problem in high-frequency circuits ( such as VCO's and mixers ) where it gets into the signal band through frequency conversion. If the baseband data carried on the RF signal has significant info near dc, then flicker noise will be a problem.

in summary: it's a problem for Analog/RF designs ( specially when dc frequencies are involved or when the signal has a narrow BW )

It should be RF, circuit.

For VCO, it will detemine the phase noise in low offset domain.

For LNA, it will impact the noise figure.

Though the main signal level is far away the flicker noise, but flicker noise will appear in every cycle of the high frequency. And it is the main noise of a active component.

I work in interface IC design for MEMS based sensors. As you may know, the main concern in sensors is noise (cause usually you need to measure very low voltage or current signals); so when you work in low frequency applications (like for instance accelerometers which measure very low frequency signals) 1/f noise is the main limitation.

Hope this helps,
