How to deal with start surge current problem?

Dear All,

I am having a problem with a motor operated device which requires +6V supply @ 2.5A. The motor is drawing current as high as 2.5A during the initial start-up period when it was turned on. The period only takes about less than half of a second. However, my whole system seems to be dying off when the motor is activated. I am suspecting that the motor draws as much current as it needs from the power supply which in results causing the voltage drop and the whole system resets by itself.

I wonder if a supercap can be used to deal with such a problem. Any idea?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Regards,
Eric

A soft start, e. g. by PWM or a series resistor, would be an obvious solution.

use a high current power supply 6v @ 3.5A

or introduce a low value resistance during starting process & then bypass it after 0.5sec

A thermistor maybe, like 100 ohm and when it heat it the value decrease near to 0 ohm
