These filters are used in IIR filter design for the same reasons that they are used in continuous time (analog) filters. They are all optimal in some sense. The Buttorworth is maximally flat. The Chebychev has the maximum stopband attenuation of all filters with a monotonic stop band. The Elliptic (not elliptical) or Cauer filter has the maximum transition band steepness. These filters are tronsformed from a continuous time (s-domain) filter to an IIR filter (z-domain) by some transformation such as the impulse invariant transform or the bilinear z transform. In general, if only the magnitude characteristics are considered, IIR filters provide superior performance to a FIR filter with the same number of multiply-accumulate operations. A. Deczky developed an IIR design technique that allows design of a filter with arbitrary gain vs frequency characteristics. See the book "Programs for Digital Signal Processing" published by the IEE Press. This book is out of print, but readily available used online.

| basically these terms( Butterworth, chebyshev ) are polinomials of mathematics,so much easy to solve in analog domain,by using analong techniques we find out transfer function then we convert it into digital domain by using some appropriate transform
