Are FPGAs system, MPUs or MCUs?

Hi,
I can't figure out, what new generation of FPGAs have become. blocks can be programmed to perform the function of basic logic gates such as AND, and XOR, or more complex.

But as for this site, it seems to me as if they are very advance not like simple FPGA system. They have DSP capability, ethernet support, DRAM and etc. In short are they CPU which requires complete peripherial to support it running or they are like microcontrollers. Do they come in the category of micrcontroller like ARM7, PIC,AVR,8051,etc
In what way do they broadly differ with MCU/MPU functionality wise?
What work can they do, which microcontroller and microprocessor can't do? Why are they so famous?

If your target application is a microcontroller type I think you should not consider using FPGAs because of cost.

If you need higher integration, high number of IOs of different standards, high speed communications, DSP processing, operations implemented in hardware, reprogramming capabilities and a lot more of cases impossible to list, you should look at an FPGA.
