Hi,

In NMOS transistor the body is of P-type material. Means rich of holes. so by applying a positive voltage at the gate terminal, then the holes between the source and drain(channel) repels by that positive voltage by leaving some negative ions at that place (or positive polarity attracts the negative polarity). So if gate voltage reaches the threshold level then electrons from the source starts flowing to drain through the inversion layer/channel. Means transistor is ON and conduction channel is formed.

Thanks

Best book to explain this concept is:

Integrated Circuits (Analog & Digital Design Systems) by Millman & Halkias.
