pic18f4550

After I found out one article regarding USB functions of PIC18F4550, I have decided to devote some time for experiments.

At the beginning I took the necessary elements:

My experiments with PIC18F4550 <> USB

1 pc Universal board
1 pc. PIC18F4550
1 pc. 40PIN Socet
1 pc 20MHz Crystal
1 pc USB Connector
1 pc. 470nF Capacitor
1 pc. 100nF Capacitor
2 pc. 22pF Capacitors
1 pc 4,7K Resistor
Some wires ...

There are some photos and scheme:

PIN outs of the USB connector which I used

The board is done :

After the assembling the scheme, I connected it to the USB of the PC without programming the PIC microprocessor.
The result was null- Windows does not indicated that something was connected to the USB port.

I started programming the microcontroller. I used a JDM programmer and one of my favourite software for PIC - PICPgm.

At the beginning I downloaded from somewhere maybe an older version of the HEX file for the PIC.
After the programming and connecting to the PC, the following mistake occurred : "USB Device not recognized"
Unfortunately, It took me 2 hours for reading articles about this theme, until I found out where exactly is the problem.
I am not using MPLab and the relevant programmer, and that's why It turns out that there is no FUSE configuration in the ready compilated HEX file that I use.

"Found New Hardware"

Finally I downloaded this file from Microchip:

http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/MCHPFSUSB_Setup_v1.3.exe

All it does is to install files under C:\MCHPFSUSB.

I programmed the PIC with the first HEX file that I have found out in "C:\MCHPFSUSB\fw\_factory_hex\picdemfsusb.hex"

After the programming and connecting again to the PC USB port ... ·Yeah·... the expected sound could be heard!

pic usb 18f4550

hello there,

i was wondering how did u manage to troubleshoot the "USB not recognized" problem? i have the same problem and the driver i installed, (d/l from Microchip) doesnt seem to work. what could be the problem here? please help!

is it my driver? i've just downloaded it and unzip it into C directory, and when the PC notices the USB, it prompted me for driver. so i directed it to the folder. am i doing it correctly?

thanks so much

Hi carrie,

I think (but no sure) that for "USB not recognized" problem is not guilty driver.
This means that there is hardware problem.
When I program PIC without Config Bits Windows show "USB not recognized".
After program PIC as must – Windows show “Found New Hardware” and next step is driver.

I read anywhere that USB connector must nearly to PIC USB PIN’s. Possible this too causation "USB not recognized" problem.

I did something similar to you, but when I selected: "Install the software automatically" it didn't work.

Where are the drivers for this device ?

Added after 2 minutes:

Never mind, I found them.

Thanks.

Did you program the controller with the picdemfsusb.hex from the microchip solutions examples ?

If you don't want to use that then you will need to create your own USB service application.

This is what I did...

The PCB and SCH are in Eagle for those who would like to modify (single sided and easy to make). The board WORKS 100% with Microchip MCHPFSUSB v2.2 firmware, however the temperature sensor is to small to solder so I left it out. For those who can code please look at the new USB Lib for BoostC and see if you can make it work - Please.

And you're happy just with that ?

I have tested too the Microchip MCHPFSUSB v2.2 firmware - Generic Driver Demo and it work fine. But this is just doing some led swiching and read the ADC value.
Let's make it a Full-Speed Bulk Transfer 12Mb/s ! You're with me ?
