| hi, can anyone tell me how to connect the variable resistor which consists three terminal. Show with pictures or circuit diagrams are better if possible. Thank you

| I would recommend you to realize about it by yourself by getting a tester connected to these terminals and modify the resistor value. You'll see in a few seconds how you're supposed to connect it...

It is easy.
the first and last terminal will give you all the resistance of the resistor the middle is a varying point. To use it as a variable resitor choose any extrimity 1 or 3 and the middle pin.
the max value of the potentiometer or variable resistor is written on the component.
hope i have HELPED you

lycianz,
The most common failure mode for a potentiometer is an open wiper (pin 2 in pakitos' diagram). If an open circuit is unacceptable, it is a common practice to connect the wiper to one of the end terminals. That way, if the wiper opens up, you still have the end-to-end resistance in your circuit, rather than an open.

What happens to the resistance value in that case?
The resistance will not reach the max value. Since you have made a short circuit.

Suppose that Pin 1 represents the terminal that the wiper approaches for maximum CCW roatation. Then Pin 3 represents the CW end. Suppose the wiper (pin 2) is connected to pin 3. If the wiper is adjusted fully CW (toward pin 3), then the resistance that appears between pin 1 and the wiper is the end-to-end resistance of the potentiometer. If you want the resistance to be maximum at the fully CCW direction, then you would connect the wiper to pin 1.

Hi if pin 1 and pin2 are considered and pin 2 is connected to pin 3 by a short circuit.
If the wiper is put in the middle will the resistance be equal to Rmax/2 as before?

Yes, the mid-travel resistance from pin 1 to pin 2 is Rmax/2 whether pin 2 is connected to pin 3 or not.

how is that?
if pin 2 is not connected to pin3
the resistance between 1 and 2 will vary from zero to Rmax and not to Rmax/2.
