Hi,
Till now, I never have come across anyone telling "The definition of embedded system is...", since it is very abstract. I would define an embedded system as one which has the following characteristics:
1. Has the ability to take inputs and produce the required outputs.
2. Usually has few (or many) components embedded in it, which work in sync to produce the required output
3. A particular embedded system is meant for a particular application.
4. Operates in real-time, i.e a finite time to respond to a particular input.
Anybody adding more points to the above list? And arunkumar_sek, I have not given the definition of Embedded system, rather have given their characteristics. So, you can go on to make your own definition out of this.

1. Is a combination of hardware and software.
2. Which runs infinetely( till it is powered ON)
3. Uses 1 controller for its application.
4. Dedicated to one application.
5. Consumes less power.
6. User friendly
Most important of all.
*****) takes less amount of time to boot up.

mainly embedded system consists of FPGA(field programable gate array)
these contains millions and millions of ic's or transistors
embedded in them...all together work as a unit even we can insert power processors in them ...
