rms application

I have a set of data and i want to know the average
What is suitable (AND WHY)
1) AM (Simple mean) of data
2) RMS (Root Mean Square) of Data
It'll be highly appreciated if any one give justification as well.
Regards

Re: rms Application

I think RMS values are used to measure physical phenomenons that have an oscillatory and periodic nature. For example: alternate current and vibration.
These phenomenons can have positive and negative values (in the case amperes (A) and acceleration (G)) and a simple average could be result in null or zero, but nevertheless it does have some kind of effect (work) and with RMS it can be measured in some way (RMS cancel the effect of negative and positive values).
For non periodic and non oscillatory phenomenons as for example temperature measurement, a simple average is sufficient.

Re: rms Application

Other reason to use RMS is because, due it is calculated powering and rooting the samples, the result can be understood like power equivalent value.
Power values are generally taken powering values; like P = (V^2)/R .

Re: rms Application

RMS is good for data that represent energy transfer ( especially where negative and positive values are mixed up). Arithmetic Mean (AM) might give you a zero which may not be true.
