Just thought I would put my two cents.
You are right..after a few years of experience, it's pretty manual labor. That's why many people without EE degree do well in layout as well.
If you do stay in physical design area though, I would suggest you develop in these skills..
- Analog/RF layout design - learning noise/signal integrity issues etc.
- Place and route, timing driven layout.
- Good floor planning.
- Parasitic extraction
- Electromagnetic simulation
- Perl programming
Also, even if you don't do circuit design, you can slowly learn concepts in circuit design, basic analog/RF circuits like LNA, Mixers, simple amplifiers etc.
The more you know about circuits, the more you will love and appreciate physical design.
or do it like me..go to medical school after working for a few years. If that is your passion though:)
