What is the difference between simple ON/OFF action & differential ON/OFF action in control system ? Thanks in advance ~

A simple on/off can be a single output changed by a signle event - like a SPST switch, where 'differential' assumes multiple of something (and being opposite), and could be for inputs, like an XOR gate, or output like a JK flip flop where one output is always the opposite of the other output. The context would be needed as some people may not use these terminologies the same.

A homes '3-way' switch could be considered a 'differential switch' I suppose.

Where I would consider a normal light switch a 'simple on/off' switch.

But context is also needed for any better answer.
