what is a SERDES?

can someone here clarify what is a SERDES?
what applications/designs it is being used?
what are the design guidelines to be considered when doing design/layout of SERDES circuits?

Re: what is a SERDES?

Hello,

serdes (SERialize DESerialize) is a block usually fit in an FPGA for high speed data transfer.
If you want to exchange data between two FPGA you can use a serdes link instead a big number of wire.
However you can find more information in the FPGA manufacturer site.

xilinx name his serdes RocketIO, so you can browse this name in the xilinx website.

altera and lattice have serdes too.

In the fpga manufacturer's website you can find detailed information about design and pcb guidelines and other technical information.

I hope this help you.
Regards

D.

A Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) is a pair of functional blocks commonly used in high speed communications. These blocks convert data between serial data and parallel interfaces in each direction. Although the term "SerDes" is generic, in speech it is sometimes used as a more pronounceable synonym for SGMII[][/code][/b]
