I'm working on a PIC Microcontroller.
It will cover MODERN 16F & 18F PICs with a focus on projects that will function with blueroomelectronics PIC kits.
I want title name so I thought I'd offer points to the best suggestion entered in this thread before December 15, 2007.

It's a good start. Home-made implies hand wired, Easy well that's subjective.
The Mongoose kit can cover fairly advanced subjects such as feedback (PID) worth a book all it's own.

Now your getting in the spirit of things.
It'll be a introduction to PICs, focusing on the 18F PICs more than the 16F PICs, (There are so may PIC 16F books)
It'll also be an upgradeable book, available online on a pay what you can afford basis with new chapters coming out whenever possible.
