I use Eagle. It's not too expensive (look for the non-commercial option), and easy to learn. Runs under Windows and Linux.

Fedora provides a Livecd CD "Fedora Electronic Lab" in which you have pcb and gEDA on it.

I tried gEDA and Eagle for Layout and Schematic. Also I used Allegro (OrCAD) and I can say that Eagle (for its price) is definitely a good option. If you have enough (extra) money Allegro is the best!

| I have used Eagle PCB profesionally for several years. It is a well executed product and very easy to learn and use. It has a very effective command line interface in addition to the drag and drop. The only weakness is the library management but once you get used to it that is not a show stopper. Though I haven't used any of the other packages under Linux, I highly recomend Eagle.

I'm using kicad, for two layers and 4 layers pcb, and I'm very happy. I used for years protel, using only 50% of its capabilities, in kicat I use 90% and is good for me. A good think is that you can make your own scripts or software to handle directly it's files because the are textual one. So, for example, if you want to change all the hole to one value you can do it very easily.
