What do you think better for life, Bruxelles or Barcelona?

On the other hand, pleasant weather may divert you from your studies with temptations to stay outdoors with people instead of indoors with your books.

I'm from Belgium. Don't underestimate factors like taxation levels and cost of living in Brussels! The Belgian government has one of the highest tax levels. A disgusting part (>50% !!) of my wages are directly stolen by the government! And with all the Eurocrats in Brussels, housing is way more expensive.

i think he will not pay taxex. He is a scholarship holder.

I would say Brussels is better than Barcelona in terms of professional development. In Barcelona, there is enough sunshine, parties, you will be more satisfied with the life may be, but the people there don's speak foreign langauges. I think your program is in English, and you might have to learn French/Dutch or Spanish/Catalan.

A PhD is a postgraduate degree, and the government doesn't subsidize it anymore. I guess that a PhD student receiving a monthly fee would be considered an employee of the university, and therefore subject to tax, social security, solidarity and all other extortions that are due. Otherwise doing a PhD for many years would be a free way to get around tax laws, and the taxman is way greedier/smarter than that. The only people really exempt are our royalty and Eurocrats (go figure). Even if a high school student does some vacation jobs and earns more than roughly 2000 euros per year (!) he is considered no longer deductible from his parents' tax form.

The basic message is: watch out for living expenses and taxation levels in both cases, that the seemingly higher wages in Brussels don't turn out to get you less far at the end of the month.

Strange, I thought it was the other way round Smile

Anyway, the Netherlands don't reach to Brussels, over here we're in Flanders.
So far, few kills yet (although surviving Brussels can get very hairy in the evening).

Hi azaz,

I guess you have to think more about the topic that interests you most for research...so, don't build your decisions only on the place you'll be staying in...you'll be mostly diving into books and articles, etc.
so most important now: what do you want to study more???

as many said: Belgium and Spain are totally different in weather and cultures also...do you prefer cold weather and rain (Belgium)...or love the sunshine and warm weather (Spain)....you'll be away from home in the two cases, so it'll feel weird everywhere!

regarding religion: don't worry...as long as you're a hardworker and you're respected by everyone...then no one will bother you.....except anyone who is sick of course Smile everyone is free to choose his/her beliefs after allllll....just be self confident and don't enter into endless debates about religions in general Very Happy

Good luck,
Salma

Supporters of the Belgium's far-right party Vlaams Belang (25% votes in Flanders) wear mock------- scarves and tee-shirts reading "Stop Islamisation" during a demonstration organised by the "Stop the Islamisation of Europe" group in Brussels September 11, 2007. The demonstration, which coincides with the anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks, was banned by the mayor of Brussels on the grounds that it would threaten public order. (REUTERS/Francois Lenoir)

I just wondering whom they had asked and how they think it can be done?

May be better if they can ask someone else to stop support for vahhabism ?

Why is part of this post turning into religious and political talks...!!!
Anyway, I think Belgians are really nice. I have met two Belgian guys during my studies and they were so helpful and kind. They gave me a really good impression about Belgium. Also, Spanish people are really welcoming and warm...I've met lots of Spanish people but I specifically remember two little cute girls that spoke tons of languages...They were so tiny to know all that!!!

After allllll...go for the "studies" you prefer...don't make everything depend on just the country you're going to be in....So what did you choose at the end...??? I have to know Very Happy

Yep, you should take your decisions based on what subject you like more. Boths subjects seems interesting, I learnt a little about wavelets on a MRI course i took some time ago, cool stuff.

My sister is finishing its phd in Gent, in Belgium. She may tell you some good reasons to go Belgium instead of Spain. She worked on a lab in France, and now is very happy on Belgium.
From what I've heard, in general, phds on spain are somewhat underrated. I dont know VUB nor UAB so I can't speak properly.

Still, I'm quite sure learnign dutch will prove a challenge; in comparision, spanish is much easier. Wink
Good luck!
