When using the TFSF method the scatterer needs to be contained in the total field region. This is unrealistic since most periodic structures contain a dielectric layer which needs to extend beyond the TFSF boundary (as a unit cell).

I can probably simplify my life by just doing away with the TFSF method but that leaves me with a problem of injecting a plane wave. Any ways of injecting a plane wave without using the TFSF method?

Any comments or Ideas?

BTW Taflove's book is great but in the periodic section does not talk about using TFSF method with periodic structures with dielectric layers.

have a look at

It discusses material interfaces and the TFSF. It is unfortunately not as simple as the standard TFSF box in vacuum
