| If You're programming for chip from Xilinx, use XST (included in ISE). It works great for me, and there's no need for leaving ISE during designing-simulating-programming.

| tools is developping, and if u have a synthesis tool, just use it, the principle is almost the same

| leonardo spectrum is good for synthesis. synplify is also one of the tool for synthesis which is provided some of the vendors like lattice.

dc is considered to be the de-facto in ASIC ind.
fpgacompiler is a dc variant for fpgas (dc with only fpga libs, I think discontinued)
Synplify pro
RTL compiler
Magma Blast create
Leonardo Spectrum (Matured. Read deprecated)
Precision RTL (Mentor's replacement for Leonardo)
Vendor specifics:
xst
planahead (I am not sure if it IS a synth tool or uses xst for synth)
QuartusII
isplever (Does it have a synth tool ?)
Libero (???)
Quickwork (Uses Precision ??)

| DC is classic, but I think Magma will soon be the new de-facto standard in ASIC world.

DC for ASIC synthesis with Physical synthesis tools becoming more popular.
Synplicity or Precision for FPGAs.

| use sysnopsys's DC to do synthesis, but Candence's Conformal to do equivalence check.
